Audiology Services

Audiology Services at BRSHF are provided by practitioners with Masters degrees in Audiology, who are licensed by the State of Louisiana and who have earned Certificates of Clinical Competency through the American Speech & Hearing Association.

Testing & Evaluation:
Hearing loss and medical conditions affecting the ear often go unnoticed for years before they cause serious difficulty. Periodic screening by an audiologist detects minute changes that, once identified, can be treated. Some individuals experience hearing loss apart from the gradual changes associated with the aging process. Noise exposure, disease and trauma can cause rapid-onset hearing loss. The Foundation offers both conventional hearing testing (audiometry) and play/visual reinforcement audiometry (for children). Otoacoustic Emissions Testing and tympanometry (checking the middle ear) are also available.

Hearing Aids & Assistive Listening Devices:
The Audiology Department can, when warranted, fit an individual with hearing aids appropriate to his/her needs. Digital and analog hearing aids may be obtained from a variety of manufacturers. The Foundation also provides repair services on most brands. Many individuals with hearing loss benefit from assistive listening devices in addition to their hearing aids. The Audiology Department provides information on and sells items such as personal amplifiers, infrared/FM devices, alerting devices, phones, etc.

Specialized Services:
For both adults and children, audiologists provide assistance in learning to use hearing aids and other assistive listening devices to gain maximum benefit. In addition, clients and their families learn how to control environmental barriers to communication for hearing impaired persons.

Hearing Protection & Related Products:
BRSHF can make customized earmolds to protect children and adults in work, sports or leisure pursuits. Custom earmolds can also be made for phone/music/elechttp://www.hmgdtools.com/editPage.asp?ID=1&KeyID=53tronic devices. Related products are also available.

Cochlear Implant Assistance
BRSHF has collaborated with Cochlear Americas to act as a troubleshooting clinic for children with cochlear implants.  The families of these children will no longer have to travel to other cities when their child's cochlear implant is not working properly.  Ordering new batteries, coils, and cables along with troubleshooting will be the primary services available.
